Martin's Memo
October 1, 2007
Volume 3, Issue 2
Fall has arrived!
The cooler temperatures and colorful leaves are just some of the indicators that change is in the air. Speaking of changes, we have had a few of those at Elementary South. Liliana Mendive, our office clerk, has moved to the North campus and will be sorely missed! We would like to welcome Maureen Maher to our office staff. Maureen comes to South with lots of office experience and a big smile! We have also hired four new instructional assistants to support instruction. Please welcome Jenna Durbin, Molly Kattelman, Sharon Thompson, and Kathy Tooley. We are thrilled to have them join our South family.
We have been working hard to embed our school wide expectations into everything we do here at South. RESPECT & RESPONSIBILITY are not only the expectations, but also the culture of our school and the vocabulary that is widely used each day throughout our school. We will have our first Principal’s Pride/Soaring Eagles Luncheon to celebrate good behavior and excellent academic work in October. This month, during class meetings, we will focus on: Respect – How do you want to be treated? How do you treat others? And
using I-Messages as a tool to communicate with others. That looks like: “I feel _______ when you ______. I want ______ because _______.”
Thank you to all the parents who attended “Back to School Nights”. We appreciate your partnership and support at school. If you have any questions or input, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me. I can be reached at martinj@hawthorn73.org or (847) 990-4800. Wishing you all a wonderful fall!
All the best,
Jill Martin
MAP
Testing
2nd – 5th
We have completed our first round of MAP testing in the areas of reading and math. This computerized assessment shows a Measure of Academic Progress. Results will be sent home on NOV 1st along with last year’s ISAT or IMAGE results. Teachers use this data, as well as many other data sources to help identify student strengths and weaknesses and adjust their instruction accordingly. We work hard to provide the best educational experience possible for each child.
Safe and Orderly Environment
One of our main priorities is keeping a safe and orderly environment! We need your help, especially at drop off and pick up times. Please remember to drive slowly and cautiously at all times. When dropping off and picking up your students, in the middle of the day or after school, please do not leave your vehicle while it is stopped in the yellow striped lane. We need to move the cars through this lane quickly and safely. If parents leave their vehicle, it disrupts the traffic flow, and cars dart out of line, which causes us concern for the children’s safety. Please stay in line and please DO NOT DOUBLE PARK! We cannot have children crossing between cars to get to a double-parked car.
When planning your students’ day, please be aware that we will not be issuing temporary bus passes to students. Each student is routed to a particular location each day in our system as well as the bus company’s system. In keeping with assigned stops, we can ensure the safe arrival of the student to the proper place. If your child has to have alternate arrangements, for the day, he/she will need to be picked up from school and a note needs to accompany this request. We appreciate your help in keeping our students safe and providing a positive role model for our children.
Halloween Reminder
When picking out this year’s costume, please remember that we are a school that promotes peace and kindness. Any kind of weapons will not be allowed on school grounds during our celebration.
More Halloween info to come! Happy hunting!
Help Wanted…

Please contact Debbie Haines, our teacher clerk, through a note or phone call to the office, if you would be interested in volunteering in our school.
